Bedroom lighting and lights

It goes without saying that bedroom lighting needs to be versatile. You need a strong main ceiling light as a necessity, but you might also want or need more subtle and lower level light tones for wall lights or bedside cabinet table lamps.

Of course, whether you have a modern house or a more traditional build, the size and shape of the bedrooms and the amount of furniture they can accommodate will help you decide on the best and most appropriate combinations of bedroom lighting – and where everything might fit.

With higher ceilings, chandeliers and longer pendant lights really fill out the overhead space and shed a lovely light when necessary.

If you have a lower more modern style ceiling, there is still nothing wrong with having a pendant light but you may need to consider the drop length.

You may find it to be more practical to have wall lights or a number of bedside table lamps to give a good even light spread.  Picture lights are also a great way of showcasing pictures you have on your bedroom walls.

The correct bedroom lighting should:

  • complement your furnishings in daylight
  • be bright enough when needed
  • be able to bring out the colour of your curtains, bedding and general décor when bedroom lighting is needed and be
  • subtle enough to allow you to relax in a peaceful ambiance.

Teenagers on the other hand may have their own ideas.

Each bedroom you have will develop its own style so think about what you need and the differences between -

  • a main or master bedroom
  • a bedroom for teenagers or
  • a bedroom for children

It is worth thinking about how quickly teenagers want to change the styles and colour schemes of their bedrooms.

Often, it is better to think about replacing the light shades (often referred to as non-electric or easy fit pendants) rather than the lights as there is far more variety available at a much lower cost.

The same is also true for children's bedrooms.

On the other hand, if a bedroom is needed to double up as a study area, then you may need to consider a desk lamp as part of the bedroom lighting shopping trip.

If you can’t get them to come shopping with you, at least online, teenagers have the chance to browse and choose what they want or at least be able to approve your choices.

Bedroom ceiling lights can add that extra decorative touch.

Chandeliers, Flush mount pendant lights or easy fit non electric pendant shades can be bought to match and enhance what you have in your bedrooms.
