How to choose a floor lamp shade
When choosing a floor lamp shade, it’s important to consider the amount of light or luminance that the shade will let through. A translucent silk, linen or paper shade will diffuse soft light around your room, whereas an opaque fabric, like velvet, will give a slightly darker and more dramatic effect by producing light that beams out from the top and bottom of the shade rather than through it.

When it comes to choosing the right shade for your floor lamp, there are three types of light options to consider – ambient, task and accent lighting.

Ambient lighting is functional yet also plays a role in softening the light in your space, making for a warm, cosy and welcoming room. We suggest a fabric lampshade for creating ambience.

Task, or utility, lighting is ideal for activities that require a bright and direct light, such as reading or sewing. A floor lamp with a metal shade is perfect for directional light as the light doesn’t escape the lamp shade.
For accent lighting, a white or natural coloured lamp shade will diffuse pools of warm light, emphasising certain areas, décor or furniture in a room.

What about shade size?
What size shade you choose will be a matter of personal preference, depending on the dimensions and style of your room, as well as on the size of the lamp base itself. A large room can easily carry off an oversized shade which might dominate a smaller room, whilst a small shade could get lost in a bigger space. If you want to create a relaxing atmosphere, it's important that your lampshade is the right size to offer enough shade over the lightbulb when you're sitting down.

Floor lamps come in all shapes and sizes from classic pole styles to contemporary tripods to more chunky modern designs, so you’ll need to take this into consideration when selecting your new shade. As a general rule of thumb, your floor lamp shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base and around a third of the height - a shade that’s too large will make your lamp appear top heavy and one that’s too small will have an unbalanced look. If you’re buying a replacement shade for an existing lamp, you can use the old shade as a guide.
