What types of lighting fixtures are suitable for different rooms in my home?

Different rooms have different lighting needs. For example, pendant lights or chandeliers work well in dining rooms or entryways, while recessed lighting is great for kitchens and bathrooms. Floor lamps and table lamps are versatile options for living rooms and bedrooms.

How do I choose the right size of lighting fixtures for my rooms?

Consider the size of the room and the height of the ceiling when selecting lighting fixtures. As a general rule, pendant lighting is good for areas with high ceilings, such as hallways. Semi-flush ceiling lights are the perfect choice for new build homes with lower ceilings. If you have lower ceilings, but would like a big statement chandelier, then placing it over the dining table is great way to incorporate one, without anyone bumping their head!

What are the different types of light bulbs available and which ones are best for my needs?

All of our lightbulbs are now LED, which is not only great for the environment, but also for your bank balance! LED bulbs use much less energy than any other type of lightbulb, which means they are cheaper to run and have a much longer lifespan. View our full range of Light Bulbs.

What is the difference between warm white and cool white LED lighting?

Warm white and cool white refer to different colour temperatures of light, measured in Kelvin (K). Here's the difference between the two and where you might use them:

Warm White
Colour Temperature: Typically ranges from 2700K to 3000K.
Appearance: Warm white light has a soft, yellowish glow that resembles the warm glow of traditional incandescent bulbs.
Usage: Warm white light creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, and other areas where you want to promote relaxation and comfort. It's also commonly used in residential settings to enhance the warmth and ambiance of the space.

Cool White
Colour Temperature: Typically ranges from 4000K to 5000K.
Appearance: Cool white light has a crisp, blueish-white tone that mimics natural daylight or fluorescent lighting.
Usage: Cool white light is often used in task-oriented environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, and workspaces where bright, focused illumination is needed. It's also suitable for areas where you want to promote alertness and productivity, as it can help improve visibility and reduce eye strain.

In summary, warm white light creates a cozy and relaxing ambiance, while cool white light provides bright and energizing illumination for tasks and activities. Choosing between the two depends on the desired atmosphere and function of the space you're lighting.

What is the difference between ambient, task, and accent lighting, and how do I incorporate them into my home?

Ambient lighting provides overall illumination, task lighting is focused on specific activities, and accent lighting highlights architectural features or décor. Incorporate these types of lighting by layering them in different areas of your home for functionality and ambiance.

Can I dim LED lights & lightbulbs?

Yes, you can dim LED lights and light bulbs, but it's essential to ensure that the LED bulbs and the dimmer switch are compatible.

Here's what you need to know:

LED Dimmability: Not all LED bulbs are dimmable. When purchasing LED bulbs, make sure to check if they are labelled as "dimmable."

Dimmable LED bulbs are specifically designed to be used with dimmer switches and can adjust their brightness levels smoothly without flickering or buzzing.

Dimmer Switch Compatibility: Not all dimmer switches are compatible with LED bulbs. Traditional dimmer switches designed for incandescent bulbs may not work properly with LED bulbs, leading to issues such as flickering, buzzing, or a limited dimming range. It's essential to use dimmer switches that are specifically rated for use with LED bulbs, often labelled as "LED compatible" or "LED dimmer switches."

You can dim LED lights and light bulbs, but it's crucial to use dimmable LED bulbs and compatible dimmer switches to ensure optimal performance and avoid any potential issues.

Our products are marked as dimmable, or not, on the product pages.  Or send us a message if you are unsure!

How do I prevent glare and shadows when lighting my home?

Use diffusers or shades on light fixtures to soften glare, and position fixtures to minimise shadows.

Additionally, consider using multiple light sources at varying heights to evenly distribute light throughout the room.

If you are placing a light in your home that is near a television, or computer screen, then avoid having a bare bulb, as this will cause glare.

What is the difference between Lumens (lm) and Watts(W)?

Lumens (lm) and Watts (W) measure different aspects of light output.  Watts are what we historically used to measure light output, but now we must use Lumens instead.

Here is the different between the two:

Lumens (lm): Lumens indicate the brightness of a light source, measuring the total visible light emitted. Higher lumens mean brighter light.

They're used to compare brightness across different bulbs or fixtures, regardless of wattage.

Watts (W): Watts measure the electrical power consumed by a light source to produce light. Traditionally, higher watts meant brighter light, but this correlation is less relevant with energy-efficient bulbs.

While still indicating power consumption, watts aren't reliable for brightness comparison, especially with LED bulbs.

In summary, lumens determine brightness, while watts measure power consumption. Focus on lumens for brightness and watts for energy efficiency.

As a quick guideline, below
are some comparisons of how many lumens lightbulbs are in terms of the old wattage equivalent:

40 watts ≈ 450 lumens

60 watts ≈ 800 lumens

75 watts ≈ 1100 lumens

100 watts ≈ 1600 lumens

These equivalents can vary slightly depending on the specific bulb type and manufacturer. However, they provide a general guideline for comparing brightness across different bulb types.

How do I install lighting fixtures safely and correctly?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when installing lighting fixtures. We encourage all our customers to consult a qualified electrician. Make sure to turn off the power supply before starting any installation work and use appropriate tools and equipment.

What do the dimensions on your product specifications mean?

Diameter: total diameter including shades/glass.

Height: The total measurement from the top of the ceiling cup, including the chain or rod, to the lowest point of fitting.

Max Height: The total measurement from the top of the ceiling cup including the maximum amount of chain or rod to the lowest point of fitting.

Min Height: The total measurement from the top of the ceiling cup including the minimum amount of chain or rod to the lowest point of fitting.

Fittings with a mix/max height are supplied with the max height of the chain or rod and can be adjusted to the desired height at the point of installation.

Width: Total width including shades.

Depth: Total depth including shades.

What should I consider when lighting my bathroom?

Bathroom lighting needs to be functional and safe.  The Bathroom is divided into three zones: 0, 1 and 2 to determine likely exposures to water.

Each fitting is given an IP (Ingress Protection) rating which relates to its water resistance.

Only light fittings suitable for the relevant zone should be used.  Avoid lighting which is too bright as the polished surfaces may cause glare; diffused wall or ceiling lights are better.

The main light should be switched on by a pull cord of a light switch situated outside the bathroom.  Glass or ceramic lights are best.  It is wise to avoid those containing wood, leather or fabric as they can degrade in a humid atmosphere.

Zone 0: Lights rated in this category are suitable for inside the bath or shower.

Zone 1: Lights in this category are suitable for above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m.

Zone 2: Lights rated as suitable for Zone 2 can be put in the area stretching to 0.6m outside the bath or shower if over 2.25m.

Bathroom lights with opal-effect glass provide a soft diffused light. Glass shades are an ideal choice and won’t deteriorate in a humid atmosphere.

Being able to see well when shaving or applying make-up is essential.  Consider a well-illuminated mirror with low-energy bulbs or a light over a mirror to provide a strong pool of well-directed light.
